A Note of Thanks and Support

To all my colleagues I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for commenting on my blog, and for my regular follower I truly appreciate your support.  I was so frustrated with the Blog Assignment in the first few weeks, I was about to give up!  Then one day I got on the course site and read through many of your comments and found that it wasn't only me having trouble.  Thanks to all of your comments and discussions, I finally figured this out! Yeah!

I have truly enjoyed discussing the early childhood field with you all.  I have learned a lot from the course work, but through our conversations I have been able to hear from colleagues on their perspective of the field and current issues in education that are affecting us all on different levels.

I look forward to many more discussions as we continue on our course.

Until next time,
Sharon

Blog Assignment: Examining Codes of Ethics

Three ideals in the NAEYC Codes of Ethics that are meaningful to me are:

1. To support policies and laws that promotes the well-being of children and families. To oppose those that impairs their well-being; to cooperate with other individuals and groups in these efforts.
This ideal is important because I am a secretary at MVSU and policies, laws, and cooperation with faculty, staff, and students is important with budgets, orders, and other duties required of me.

2. To establish and maintain relationships of trust and cooperation with co-workers.
This is very important because trust with lead to cooperation, success, and progress on my job.

3. To assist the program in providing the highest quality of service.
I know that my job requires good customer services, as well as, ready for any task put before me, because I am the first person you see when entering my office and I want people to always know that I am there to assist them with whatever their needs are.

Three ideals in the DEC Codes of Ethics that are meaningful to me are :

1. We shall honor and respect the diverse backgrounds of our colleagues including such diverse characteristics as sexual orientation, race, national origin, religious beliefs, or other affiliations.
This is important to me because I provide the same customer services and help to everyone at the university regardless of any affiliations.

2. We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human potential of each child.
This is very important in my professional life because I know that I must talk and treat others as I wish to have them do to me.

3. We shall continually be aware of issues challenging the field of early childhood special education and advocate for changes in laws, regulations, and policies leading to improved outcomes and services for young children with disabilities and their families.

I always keep up with the laws, and changes, so that I can send out memos to the
staff of the changes made.

Course Resources

Over the course of our class we have been giving many resources that will assist us in the classroom and our professional careers.  I have found many of the resources in the list to be beneficial to our assignments now, but I also am learning about resources that will help me in the future.  Also, many of the sites and articles listed have assisted me in understanding policy, procedures as well as developmental issues within the early childhood education field.

Although I am not working with children in the early childhood age group presently, I have been able to apply much of what I have learned about the emotional and social development of young children to my present assignment.

I hope that these resources are beneficial to others that are seeking community resources, or guidance on early childhood issues.

My Choice Resources

Below are some resources that I considered to be beneficial.  I enjoyed the Office of Environmental Education's site because it offers many ways to incorporate the outdoors into lessons or curriculums.  Our children need to be more active, and what a wonderful way to get them moving than to get outside and play.  The N.C. Division of Child Development site I thought would be helpful to have handy for anyone who is seeking to work in the early childhood field.  At this site you can find any information on curriculum, regulations and how to apply for licenses or resources.  Finally a site that offers fun and informative information for Children and Families.  If we are going to involve families into education, we are going to need activities and ideals to encourage and support parents and families.

I hope you enjoy these resources!

A passion of Louise is to make sure that children are taught in an environment that they can nurture, grow and develop to the fullest of their ability.

I don't believe I'll ever get credit for anything I do in foreign affairs, no matter how successful it is, because I didn't go to Harvard.

A promising approach to this type of practice research is to build communities of practice based on collective expertise and designed to scrutinized and improve education.
(Virginia Buysse)

Access too many different playmates promotes young children to develop an interest in their peers and affords them many opportunities to develop play skills that are more advanced, more complex, and more coordinated with those of their peers.

Personal Childhood Web

My mom (Grace) has a heart of gold.  Her personality exceeds her character.  She has an unselfish nature and caters to the needy whether it is providing service or devoting her time.  She is well respected and always ready to lend a helping hand.  My mom instilled the relentless drive for success and work ethic I have today.  What really inspired me about her is that she always provided for me and my siblings regardless of external influences.  She created her own path and career out of nothing more than hard work.

My sister (Deborah) is a warm, quiet individual who can light up a room with her smile. She is also wise in the ways of motherhood and life in general. She is a caring individual who thinks of others before herself.   My sister had the strongest influence on my life as a child, because she was my secondary care-giver when mom was not able.  She always had a way of making you feel special whether by baking your favorite cake for Christmas or allowing you to choose one item for yourself while grocery shopping. Things were never easy and we had many struggles, but my sister always kept a positive attitude.  Her positive attitude and strong determination still influence what I do today. When I need uplifting or when I feel like giving up, just a talk with my sister will bring my spirits up and give me what I need to make my situation better.

My teacher (Mr. Hall) taught me Art.  He was brilliant-inspiring in the best possible way, not just because he had all sorts of technical expertise and was good at passing it on, but because he encouraged us to think.  Until he came along, art classes had been about putting a few objects on the desk and drawing them.  He got us to do all sorts of crazy exercises – things about perception and response.  He was everything a good teacher should be: stern at times, but good-natured; clever, creative, and fun.

My friend (Turila) is an encourager.  I have known Turila since I was 10 years old.  She has always offered words of encouragement that helped me to see beyond the present situation to a better and brighter tomorrow.  Turila is a good communicator…she listens then speaks.  I could depend on her to listen and than talk with me until a problem was resolved, instead of telling me what she would do.  She embraced difference in personalities and encouraged me and others to see the best in everyone.  Her positive attitude was contagious.

My Pastor (Eddie) is unique in that he loved and shared not only the Word of God, but also the food from his kitchen.  He taught me that we should live every day to be a blessing to someone else.  He set a great example of what a Pastor should be….a caring and sharing person.  Most importantly, he taught the Word of God.

Personalizing Your Blog

  A current photo of me

"Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future"
John Fitzgerald Kennedy

It is a true statement when it is said that you never know what a person is going through.  I recently met a young lady with the prettiest smile that I had ever seen. But what I did not know was that she has cancer. It really touched me to see someone who is experiencing so much pain and discomfort, seem to be so happy. After speaking with her, I realized how blessed I am, and that really touched my heart.
